With the help of your contribution, we at Hold The Door
For Others™ will be able to continue our efforts in
researching, developing, and distributing free resources,
workbooks, and services to those who are affected by any
type of loss or adversity nation-wide and beyond. Some examples
of our current resource publications and services are as
follows:
Recent Resource Publications (2006)
• Finding Your Way Through Sudden Loss and Adversity:
A workbook, which includes stories of adversity and growth
that are designed to inspire people to use adverse events
as a catalyst to personal growth.
• Personal Growth Guide: A developmental resource guide,
which is comprised of a collection of resources (i.e. family,
child and adult activities, books, websites, and etc.) that
help people enhance their life skills related to managing
loss and adversity.
• OTHERS(S) Resources Competency Indicator (ORCI): The
ORCI is a tool that aims to increase one’s self-awareness
so that one can realize which OTHERS(S) resources are areas
of strength and areas of development. The OTHERS(S) resources
are usable skills that both Hold The Door For Others and researchers
in the social sciences have found to be very effective in
helping people live with loss and adversity and grow from
their experience.
Additional Resource
Publications:
• Living With Loss: The Journey Through September 11th:
Our first interactive workbook
• Gaining From Loss: Our Journey Continues: An interactive
CD-ROM and accompanying workbook.
• Doorways Anthology: A collection of stories created
by people who have experienced loss that is accompanied by
reflective questions that encourage people to live with loss
and adversity and write their own story of growth.
Hold The Door Day:
• In addition to providing free resources and workbooks,
we also hold an annual event (Hold The Door Day), which is
a free day for both children and adults who have experienced
some kind of loss or adversity. Attendees participate in life-skills
based workshops, informative seminars, and get the opportunity
to connect with others who have experienced different types
of hardships. Programming is acilitated by skilled and experienced
Growth Consultants, Ph.D.’s, Psychologists, and inspirational
speakers. Attendees also receive complimentary copies of our
current resource offerings (listed above).
Outreach Initiatives/Inspirational
Speeches:
• Tsunami: Dr. Tayyab Rashid traveled to Thailand to
train helpers who were supporting people affected by the Tsunami.
He trained them in Hold The Door principles and provided them
with resources.
• New Orleans Out-Reach: In August of 2006, Hold The
Door team-members were in New Orleans working with high-school
students who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. They trained
the students and faculty in Hold The Door philosophies so
they can use their experience to help themselves and others
grow through loss and adversity.
• Inspirational Key-Note/Workshop: In August of 2006,
our President and Co-Founder Dr. Robert Fazio provided an
inspirational key-note presentation to over 500 students at
Mississippi State University about growing through loss and
adversity. Hurricane Katrina affected many of these students.
In addition, Dr. Fazio also ran a workshop for faculty members
at Mississippi State University about Progressive Leadership
in Times of Crisis. He was able to distribute Hold The Door
For Others resources.
Future Initiatives:
• Growth From the Inside Out - Workshops/Trainings:
Hold The Door For Others is looking into developing and delivering
life-skills based workshops centered around building skill-sets
within the OTHERS(S) resources. These workshops can benefit
all age groups including children in grade school to business
executives who are experiencing any type of hardship. Programming
places emphasis on helping people gain insight into how their
adversity affects them on an individual level (Inside) and
then leverages that new found awareness to strengthen and
build upon their relationships with others, as well as how
they interact and respond to loss and adversity (Out).
• Hold The Door Homerooms: This program is a vision
for students in middle school. Research shows that adolescents
who develop social and emotional competencies are more successful
in life than those who reflect only cognitive intelligence.
Volunteers from Hold the Door challenge adolescents to reach
out to others each day and to express their feelings. We are
confident that students, who learn to empathize with, and
support others, will build strong social and emotional skills
within themselves.
• Healing Through Helping Others: Hold the Door for
Others would like to begin a new program in which trained
Growth Consultants are paired with individuals who are experiencing
grief for the purpose of offering encouragement and support.
Hold the Door for Others will design the training program,
recruit, train, and pair the mentors with care receivers.
